The beautiful sunny days of Spring are just around the corner, despite London’s eagerness to throw us off with all of its stunning snow. As per usual, we’ve gathered up the top things to see and do in London throughout the month of March, and they’re definitely worth your attention. From arts and culture happenings to Mother’s Day, the month ahead of us is looking phenomenal before it even begins!
1. Andy Warhol Exhibition
Tate Modern makes a dynamic comeback to the world of wowing exhibitions with a much anticipated opening due in mid-March. Andy Warhol made a phenomenal contribution to modern art, through his embracing of consumerism, celebrity and counterculture that culminated in the creation of ground-breaking pop art. The Andy Warhol exhibits are undoubtedly amongst the most popular of the museum, but this unique retrospective will also feature works that have never before been showcased in the UK. Although the exhibition will be running until the 6th of September, it’s looking to be a popular one so we would recommend booking your tickets as soon as possible!
2. St. Patrick’s Day
The celebration of the patron saint of Ireland is a much-anticipated March event in London, and one that should be highlighted in your calendar if you’re a recently arrived student in the city! London rarely shies away from a celebration, and St. Patrick’s Day could not have been any different; Irish arts, culture, food and music are showcased in the heart of the city, as Trafalgar Square goes green! The festivities culminate in a spectacular parade on Sunday the 15th of March, that you’ll most definitely want to be a part of!
3. London Landmarks Half Marathon
The City of London is great at finding new and imaginative ways to showcase London’s beauty, and the London Landmarks Half Marathon is a testament to that. The flat and fast route of the marathon treats runners to splendid views of the most iconic spectacles, running through the likes of St. Paul’s and the Gherkin. Take part in this unique experience and spend a Sunday unlike any other, on the 29th of March; you’ll kick off the marathon on Pall Mall and finish at Downing Street, right next to the Prime Minister’s house!
4. Women of the World
March marks the arrival of International Women’s Day, and the awaited return of WOW at Southbank Centre. The Women of the World Festival makes its comeback from the 6th to the 8th of March, featuring an empowering line up of world-class speakers, activists and performers, including Naomi Wolf, Deborah Frances-White and Sandi Toksvig. Be a part of discussions surrounding the issue of gender equality in a global perspective and engage with subjects that matter most to women today.
5. Mother’s Day in London
Mother’s Day in London is celebrated on the 22nd of March, in perfect tune with the blossoming of flowers, making for a harmonious occasion. For a number of students this day entails quite a bit of a distance from their families, so it’s a bittersweet celebration. Yet London makes it all the more worthwhile, with an abundance of quirky present ideas mushrooming all over London’s windows. So, be sure to scope out the sensational shopping scene for the ideal Mother’s Day gift and prep a package to send over to your loved ones, letting them know how much you care!
